TOPIC: “Crossing Paths: Research in Dance Pedagogy between China & Indiana”

This colloquium presents the results of international collaborative research between dance educators in the American mid-west and Beijing, China. In the spring of 2012 the Indiana University Contemporary Dance Program in the Department of Kinesiology (IU, Bloomington) welcomed a dance scholar from Shanghai Sport University for a year-long residency. The goal of this exchange was to share undergraduate dance pedagogy and discover new approaches to dance education through the study of Traditional Chinese Cultural Dance forms, in contrast with a dance science based, core curriculum founded in modern dance and kinesiology. Students in the IU Contemporary Dance Program learn and perform traditional temple and folk dances from this historic and unique culture. They also explore Chinese Dance Sport and Artistic Gymnastics, the Chinese contemporary dance forms taught presently in university programs. They will report on original research mid-way through the year-long exchange and collaboration between three American ‘classically trained’ modern dance educators and the Chinese dance scholar ‘classically trained’ from China and her distinct ethnic province.

Selene Carter is a Lecturer in the Kinesiology Department at IU Bloomington. She received her MFA in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As a Chicago dance artist she received a Ruth Page Award, the city’s highest honor in dance, for her improvisational work, as well as funding from city agencies and private foundations. Selene recently completed a certification in Evan’s Laban Based Modern Dance Technique.

Elizabeth Shea is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Kinesiology Department and Director of the Contemporary Dance Program at IU Bloomington. She has received numerous grants and commissions to create dance works and has served on the faculty and as a guest artist at many American universities, dance companies, and dance schools. A fellow in the IU Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities, Liz recently premiered Between the Sun and the Moon which utilizes visuals created from motion captured movement and was also performed at the 13th Bi-Annual Symposium in Arts and Technology at Connecticut College.

Ma Gulandanmu is an Associate Professor of Dance Choreography at Shanghai University of Sport in the College of Sport, Recreation, and Art. She currently serves as a visiting scholar in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington Department of Kinesiology, in the Contemporary Dance Program. While at IU, her choreography of traditional Chinese folk dances will be featured in “Global Perspectives”, the 2013 annual dance concert of the program. Professor Ma joined Shanghai University of Sport in 2005 and specializes in Chinese folk fitness dance. From 2001 to 2005, Professor Ma worked as a television director in the Chinese Central Television Art Center. From 1999 to 2001, she worked at the Chinese Performing Arts Agency. Professor Ma received her Master’s degree in dance from the China Art Research Institute in 1999 and Bachelor’s degree from Qinghai Normal University in 1991. Professor Ma belongs to the Salar nationality, an ethnic minority group in China.
