Latin America and Africa:  A Musical Journey

Over the last four centuries, Africa has deeply influenced most cultures in the Americas. Latin American musical traditions are the result of an amazing blending of elements originated from Native, African and European cultures. From Brazil to Cuba, African musical traits can be found everywhere. The intense circulation within the Black Atlantic gave birth to new musical styles in the Americas and changed the shape of music in the whole world.

Under the perspective of ethnomusicology, Dr. Xavier Vatin will transport the audience through a musical journey between Africa and Latin America.

Author and co-author of several books, articles, CDs and films on Afro-Brazilian music and religion, Dr. Vatin is a Professor of Anthropology and Ethnomusicology at the Federal University of Recôncavo (Brazil), an Associate Researcher at Lyon 2 University (France) and currently a Visiting Scholar at Indiana University’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Please join Dr. Vatin and his musical journey on Wednesday, October 9th, 7:00 p.m., at the Indiana Memorial Union—Georgian Room. The event is in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month and co-sponsored by the Office of International Services and the Latino Cultural Center (La Casa).

The Fulbright Commission in Argentina and the Government of the City of Buenos Aires offer 2-4 scholarships to U.S. elementary school teachers to teach English at elementary schools in Buenos Aires for four months (March-June 2014).   Applicants who have experience teaching English as a second or foreign language and who speak Spanish are preferred.  The grantee will receive rountrip travel, visa fee, health insurance, and a stipend of $3,100 dollars per month. Beatriz Dujovne (author of In Strangers’ Arms: The Magic of Tango, Psychologist, and Tanguera), Alfredo Minetti (scholar, musician, and co-director of This is Tango Now), and Joni Chan (concert pianist with a doctorate in piano from IU) will lead the morning class in a demonstration, debate and involvement of the audience in the magic of tango.  The Tango Piano Duo, Beatriz Dujovne, and Dr. Anya Royce will explore the idea of strangers coming together, the concept of the embrace, and the cultural perception and performance of time. Audience involvement aims at people’s understanding of some of the main characteristics of tango, using their own bodies as the platform for reaching understanding. Guests welcome.

This course examines how national ideas about race, health and disease have concurrently informed and been shaped by practices of enslavement and incarceration in the U.S. and the Caribbean. It thinks through the ways that "blackness" has been historically medicalized-as diseased, as a disease itself-and also seriously considers the legacies of racialized health discourse and health care administration in former slave societies.

Overview of Work

We are currently seeking an International Development Coordinator for a commitment of one year with a focus on writing stories and gathering information from the field pertaining to microfinance in rural Honduras. This individual will focus his/her efforts on producing material to be used in conjunction with the Adelante Foundation's marketing materials, newsletter, social media channels, website, and blog. In addition, he/she will also carry-out grant research, writing, and reporting; donor relations including correspondence and field visits; and coordination of reporting to various national and international microfinance networks. The applicant will be based out of our head office in La Ceiba, Honduras, but he/she will be required to travel extensively throughout Honduras to interact with our borrowers, their businesses and credit officers. This is a unique opportunity for an individual with an interest in international development, journalism, communications, and/or fundraising who is self-motivated and creative enough to work independently from the field in Honduras.

Requirements

·         Commitment to international development and to the advancement of the rural Honduran poor

·         Very strong writing skills (descriptions for newsletters, web, social media, press releases, grants)

·         Knowledge of grant research, writing and reporting

·         Strong interpersonal skills

·         Proficient in English and Spanish

·         Current driver’s license

·         Ability to manage time well and successfully meet deadlines

·         Familiarity with Wordpress, Google Analytics and Constant Contact preferred but not required

·         Using social media as public face and forum for nonprofit organization

·         General interest in photography and use of simple editing software

·         Experience traveling, working, and/or living abroad inLatin America

·         An independent traveler comfortable navigating the country alone, staying overnight in hotels

·         Comfortable traveling at length on the back of a motorcycle

Commitment & Compensation

We are looking for someone who can commit to a flexible schedule for one full year with a monthly stipend of $500.00 per month with an ideal start date of August 1, 2012. All in-country travel expenses will be covered and he/she will be provided with the technology to work from the field, for example, a laptop & camera.

Guatemala study abroad

The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona and the Center for Mesoamerican Research (CIRMA)invite you to participate in a study abroad program in Antigua, Guatemala. “A Matter of Balls: Sport, Masculinity, and Popular Culture in Latin America”

Few human activities parallel sport’s ability to transverse cultural and political boundaries. In Latin America, sport is without a doubt a passion for millions, an enormous business, and ultimately, an imposing cultural phenomenon deserving close study.  This course will focus on the development of professional sports as a social phenomenon and its relation to political life. Specifically the class will center on sports and its influence on the formation, shaping, and maintenance of gender identities in the region. The class will approach the study of sport using methods drawn from history, anthropology, sociology, gender and cultural studies.
