CASA Child Advocates - Applications due Sept. 19

Court Appointed Special Advocates change the lives of abused and neglected children by representing their best interests in court. Volunteers monitor the child's health and education, help identify the best interests of the child, and submit recommendations to the court. Community members are urgently needed to become child advocates to over 40 waitlisted children. No special skills needed; training and support provided. Applications due Sept. 19 for the training which will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Mon. and Thurs. from Sept. 30-Nov. 4. Reliable transportation and daytime flexibility are a must. Minimum age is 21. Events: the Honorable Joan Donoghue

On February 17-19, a very special guest will be at the Maurer School of Law: the Honorable Joan Donoghue.  Judge Donoghue is the U.S. member of the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court.  An arm of the United Nations based in The Hague, the Court is charged with settling legal disputes between nations.  In recent years, it has addressed issues including German immunity from claims brought by Italian nationals arising out of Nazi war crimes; the legality of the use of force during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia; and the obligation of the United States to allow Mexican consular officials to meet with their citizens in U.S. prisons.

In addition to serving as a judge on the World Court, Judge Donoghue has had a long and illustrious practice in international law.  She has held many different positions within the Department of State, including that of Acting Legal Adviser, advising Secretary Clinton and President Obama on aspects of international law.

Judge Donoghue will participate in two public events during her visit to Bloomington.  The first is a panel discussion entitled “Exploring the Effectiveness of International Law,” sponsored by the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies, which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 5:00 p.m. in the law school’s Moot Court Room.  The panel will be moderated by Professor David Fidler, of the Maurer School of Law; Judge Donoghue will be joined on the panel by Professor Feisal Istrabadi of the Maurer School of Law and the School of Global and International Studies, and Professor Yvonne Dutton of the McKinney School of Law.  

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, Judge Donoghue will deliver the George P. Smith II Lecture, entitled “International Law and Indiana: Reflections from the World Court.” It will be held at noon in the law school’s Moot Court Room; a reception will follow.

What is the Student Body Supreme Court?

 

The Court is the judicial branch of the Indiana University Student Association (IUSA). Court members hear appealed judicial board cases, acting as student representatives on three-person judicial hearing commissions. The Court also adjudicates election disputes, certifies election results, hears challenges to the IUSA Constitution and Bylaws, and confirms the new IUSA executive administration each year. Additionally, each year the Court hosts a conference with campus judicial boards for the purposes of facilitating discussion about the campus judicial system. Court justices also serve as student appointees on advisory boards across campus. The Court is unique in that its decisions have the potential to impact the entire IU-Bloomington community. CASA urgently needs community members like you to become child advocates, as children are on a waitlist. Applications are being accepted for the upcoming training, which will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Tues. and Thurs. from Feb. 25 to April 8. Applications are due prior to session start. Child advocates must be 21 and have reliable transportation and daytime flexibility. The average time commitment is 10-15 hours a month. Law Day 2013

Both events below are great for all IU students, including freshmen and sophomores.  But if you are a current applicant or a junior, you should consider attendance at both events mandatory!  Casual attire is fine.

 

1.  Panel Discussion, Q & A, 9:00 - 10:45 AM (quiet latecomers welcome) in Whittenberger Auditorium - IMU.  Three Law School Deans will reveal the inner secrets of the admissions process:  “WHAT REALLY WORKS IN A LAW SCHOOL APPLICATION!”  These experts will provide invaluable insider information that you can’t find anywhere else.  The panel is extremely informative, and always entertaining---so come early and come with questions!

 

2.  Law Fair, 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM in the Tree Suites Rooms of the IMU.

Representatives from 121 law schools will be here to recruit YOU!  Ask questions about their programs, admission requirements, and your specific strengths (and weaknesses).  Pick up material, forms, information (and souvenirs).  Most reps are Deans of Admission, and making a good impression can be helpful in the admissions process!  Don’t know what to ask?  Consider these Questions to Ask Law Schools.

Basic Mediation Training - Sept. 14, 15, 21, 22

TheCommunity Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) is offering 'Basic Mediation Training' from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at the IU Maurer School of Law. Tuition is $200 with discounts possible for those with financial need. Class size is limited to 24. Participants must attend all classes to complete the course. While the training is provided to build CJAM's ranks of trained volunteer mediators, it is valuable for anyone who regularly encounters conflict. CJAM is a leader in collaborative decision-making, conflict resolution and restorative justice. Its mediators work with business managers, customers, homeowners, landlords, roommates, non-profit boards, juvenile offenders and victims of crime. Minimum age is 16. Free CASA-Raiser Breakfast - Sept. 4

Learn how you can make a huge difference in an abused child's life by becoming a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) by attending their free CASA-raiser breakfast from 8-9 a.m. on Sept. 4 at Trinity Episcopal Church on Grant St. You'll meet current CASAs, have your questions answered, and enjoy a delicious breakfast. CASAs represent the best interests of a child in court while also monitoring the child's health and education. Volunteers are urgently needed to serve children now! The next training will be on Tues. and Thurs. from 5:30-8:30 p.m. from Oct. 1 through Nov. 7. Applications are due Sept. 20. Average time commitment is 10-15 hours a month.
