REMINDER: 2014-2015 Carnegie Junior Fellows Program

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for the internal competition for the Carnegie Junior Fellows Program (see below) is Friday, November 8 at 4:00 p.m. Please encourage your students with a strong interest in international affairs AND strong critical thinking and writing skills to apply for this unique program.

• Graduating college seniors or students who have graduated within the past academic year but who have not begun graduate studies
• Demonstrated interest in and completion of a significant amount of coursework in international affairs, political science, economics, history, or Russian, Chinese, Middle Eastern or South Asian Studies (see list of 2014-2015 programs below)
• Eligible and able to work in the United States for a full 12 months from August 1 through July 31. Note: Students on F-1 visas who are eligible to work in the US for the full year may apply.
• High academic merit, including a minimum College GPA of 3.750

Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

 

IU Bloomington will nominate up to 2 students for this prestigious program, and each year we hold an internal competition to select our nominees. To be eligible, you must have senior standing and intend to graduate in May, 2013 or, if you have graduated within the past academic year you must not have begun a program of graduate studies.

 

Applicants should have completed a significant amount of course work in international affairs, political science, economics, history, Russian, Chinese, India or Middle East Studies, have an excellent academic record (minimum cumulative College GPA 3.750), in addition to strong research and writing skills. Specific language and other skills may be required for certain assignments. Nominees do not necessarily have to be U.S. citizens if they attend a University located in the United States. However, all applicants must be eligible to work in the United States for a full 12 months from August 1 through July 31 following graduation. Students on F-1 visas who are eligible to work in the US for the full year (August 1 through July 31) may apply for the program.

 

Junior Fellows work at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC for a period of one year beginning on August 1, 2013. The monthly salary is $3,000 (equivalent to $36,000 annually), subject to federal, state, and local taxes. A generous benefits package is provided, including medical, dental, and life insurance as well as vacation leave. Junior Fellows are responsible for their own housing arrangements.

 

Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials.

The Carnegie Endowment does not accept direct student applications for this award. The IUB internal competition will be held by early December. After this internal competition, winners will be notified and IUB will forward the names of up to two successful nominees to the Carnegie Endowment. Finalists selected by the Carnegie Endowment are invited for personal interviews in February and early March. Those not selected for interviews will be notified in the month of February. Selection decisions will be made by the Carnegie Endowment no later than March 31^st.

Junior Fellows Program

 

Each year, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace holds a rigorous national competition to select approximately 8-10 graduating seniors to serve as research assistants on Carnegie Endowment projects. They are matched with senior associates – academics, former government officials, lawyers and journalists from around the world – to work on a variety of issues related to international affairs. Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, participate in meetings with high- level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists and government officials.

 

Junior Fellows spend one year (beginning August 1st) at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC. Positions are full-time and include a salary ($36,000/year) and benefits package.

 

2013 – 2014 Projects

·         Democracy

·         Nuclear Policy

·         Energy and Climate

·         Economics - Economics background required.

·         Middle East Studies - Native or near-native Arabic language skills essential.

·         South Asian Studies -Applicants should be comfortable with quantitative data manipulation as well as possess an interest in military issues. Strong background in international relations, political theory or international political economy is essential. Note: foreign language skills not required.

·         Southeast Asian Studies - Background in politics and economics of the region and knowledge of quantitative techniques a plus.

·         Asian Studies - Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus. Japanese language skills may be helpful.

·         Russian/Eurasian Studies - Excellent Russian language skills required.
