Middle Way House Volunteer Training - April 18

Middle Way House will be training new volunteers to maintain the level of service that they provide to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities, including crisis line, childcare, tutoring, legal advocacy, community reception, and youth mentoring. Training is a prerequisite to volunteering, but it is also appropriate for both men and women interested in learning more about gender and domestic violence. Pre-registration is not necessary. The training will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 18, at the downtown Transit Center at Third and Walnut Streets. Minimum age is 16. Spanish and Portuguese Song Festival April 10th, 2015 - 6 pm
Neal Marshall Black Cultural Center
This year 8 undergrad students studying Spanish and Portuguese in the Spanish and Portuguese department will be competing for a top prize. Participanting students will perform songs from Colombian, Mexican, Spanish, Brazilian artists among some other ones. Special guests include Emmanuel Padilla (harpist), Venus Hernandez (soprano vocalist), Valeria De Castro (Bossa Nova, Samba, Jazz) and Birimbi (afro-Colombian and other Latin American rhythms) from the Latin American Music Center, the Jacobs School of Music and Bloomington will also perform during the festival.

Recent torrential rains and heavy flooding in Chile’s northern region have left 12 dead and 20 disappeared. Atacama, Antofagasta, and Coquimbo are the most affected regions, where thousands of homes have been destroyed, roads made impassible, and potable water has become obsolete. According to the mayor of Copiapó, 80% of the city has been buried under the mud and rain. The northern catastrophe hit Chile on the heels of massive fires that burned 93,000 hectares of land in the southern region in these last two years. Although urgent help is necessary, efforts to reconstruct homes and rebuild towns and cities will take months. Our timeline is to raise as many funds as possible (meeting and even surpassing our goal) within 3-4 weeks. Thanks for your donation and for sharing the link!

Study Abroad in Cuba at George Mason University 
This summer George Mason University's  Center for Global Education is offering a four-week-long trip to Cuba! We have extended the deadline for the program so there is still time to apply.
This is a great opportunity for students to travel and earn 6 undergraduate credits. On this month-long excursion, students will be immersed in the Cuban culture by visiting famous landmarks by Ernest Hemingway and visit various sites in Havana. This is a great time for students to utilize this opportunity to study abroad in Cuba due to the recent 'normalization' announcement between the two countries. ILFF Callout for Volunteers

DEPARTMENTAL CALLOUT FOR VOLUNTEERS The In Light Film Festival is aimed at promoting and supporting ethnographic documentary films on Indiana University’s campus. Documentary films have long been used as effective teaching aids and, at the same time, as tools for public debate on contemporary socio-political issues. Through this festival, we wish to create a bridge to facilitate dialogue between professionals in the field and the general public. By engaging professors and students from a wide range of disciplines in the planning and implementation of the festival, we are focused on creating a professional team with experience in ethnography, film production, and festival organizing. Furthermore, the festival aims at creating valuable resources for students who would like to use ethnographic film in their scholarly projects. Thursday, March 5th through Saturday, March 7th, 2015 Volunteers to work 2-3 shifts throughout the weekend. WonderLab Volunteer Training - Feb. 18, Mar. 11, May 20

Volunteers with the WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology encourage visitors of all ages to explore hands-on exhibits and programs. Volunteers include teens, college students, scientists, educators, business people, parents and senior adults. Teens must be at least in grade 7. Some volunteers bring a wide range of expertise; others learn new skills. Volunteers do not need a background in science as all training is provided. My name is Stephanie from the English Opens Doors Program and I am writing you today with a very exciting update for the graduating students at your institution! Our Program has added a second volunteer service for the second semester in the Chilean Public school system!  What does this mean for your students?  For the first time, we have two program start dates in August! Students graduating in April, May, or June will have an increased chance to start their professional career with our fantastic opportunity!

As you may remember from my previous emails, the English Opens Doors Program is a fee-free, volunteer initiative which invites native and near-native speakers to volunteer-teach English in the Chilean public school classrooms. We are a part of the Ministry of Education in Chile and supported by the United Nations Development Program and our goal is to improve public education in Chile, and increase the level of opportunities available to students who can’t afford to pay for a privately funded education.

AYUDA began its involvement in Haiti supporting the first-ever diabetes education camp for youth living with type 1 diabetes in Haiti back in February 2012. This will be AYUDA’s second year bringing a team of volunteers to Port-au-Prince. Click here for more details on the program. Program 2 - Ganémosle Volunteer Program: May 30th - June 8th  Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: In this 9-day program volunteers will gain hands-on experience working on a national grassroots diabetes public awareness campaign and fitness event to be held in the nation’s capital, Santo Domingo. Together with AYUDA partner Aprendiendo A Vivir (AAV), volunteers will work with the general public, focusing on diabetes advocacy and awareness issues (in Spanish)! These projects will motivate and support young people living with Type 1 diabetes, as well as their families. VITAL Tutor Orientation - Oct. 14, Oct. 23, Dec. 11

Volunteers in Tutoring Adult Learners (VITAL) Basic Literacy Tutors provide adults with instruction in basic to intermediate reading, writing, and math. Prospective tutors first attend a mandatory orientation for new VITAL volunteers, which provides an overview of adult literacy issues and the expectations of volunteers, learners, and staff. Upcoming orientations will be from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 14, and from 10-11:30 a.m. on both Oct. 23 and Dec. 11. Registration is required. Volunteers are then provided with free training, are matched with adult learners, and can expect to spend 2-3 hours a week on tutoring and record keeeping. Minimum age is 18. Volunteer: Taste of East Africa

The fifth annual Taste of East Africa, sponsored by Kilimanjaro Education Outreach, will feature a buffet dinner, silent auction of East African art, and entertainment by Bernard Woma and his African music group. Proceeds will help children orphaned by a ferry disaster and children from a remote Tanzania village. Volunteers will decorate, learn to make exotic food, or assist with tickets, and can volunteer from 3-6 p.m. on Oct. 10, the day before the event, or choose a three-hour shift between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on event day, Oct. 11. IU Korean Night Volunteer Request

Greetings from the IU East Asian Studies Center!

 

As many of you know, the EASC will be holding its Second Annual Korean Night event on Saturday, October 4 from 2:00 to 8:30 at the IU Education building. This event will be a grand opportunity to experience and learn more about Korean traditions, politics, games, film, culture, and FOOD! The event is free and we encourage everybody to attend. As we approach the date of the event, we are still seeking volunteers and we would like to humbly ask for more people to lend their assistance and help this become the spectacular occasion that we have been planning for over a year.

 

For those who volunteer at the event, we will provide free Korean Night T-shirts as well as some delicious Korean cuisine. Please help us make this Korean Night better than last year’s and even if you are unable to volunteer, we hope to see you on October 4!

Protective Order Assistant Partnership

The Protective Order Assistance Partnership is seeking committed volunteers to serve as Protective Order Assistants (POA) for victims of sexual violence, domestic violence and stalking. POAs work one-on-one with patrons to complete Protective Order applications, create safety plans, and provide referrals for emergency needs. Voluneers will have a unique opportunity to assist survivors of violence and to interact with a multidisciplinary team. A minimum six month commitment is preferred.
