AUA Special Google Hangout - Pink Pangea Travel Writing Workshop  Join us Thursday, March 6 at 12pm EST for this Special Information Session   Ever wondered what makes a great travel writer? Curious about the AUA Summer Service Internship program?   In a special Google Hangout with Pink Pangea Editor, Rachel Sales we'll read compelling pieces by prolific travel writers and learn how to make our own experiences come to life on paper.  We'll also discuss how to relay our insights while maintaining cultural sensitivities; how to use voice and tone to effectively convey experiences; and how to exercise objectivity and subjectivity with finesse. Here are samples of some of the writings we'll be reviewing. On Loss and Overcoming Obstacles in Namibia A Girl's Guide to Moroccan Weddings - Say Yes to the Dresses   There are limited spaces available for this AUA event. Please RSVP to stefanc@creativelearning.org before 5 pm on March 4 to receive instructions on how to access the webinar.   Pink Pangea is an online magazine and forum founded by two women passionate about writing and travel, who took notice of the limited resources out there specifically for female travelers. Their goal has been to create an online community for women who travel or who want to travel, with honest support, advice, and insight from other women. Visitors to Pink Pangea's website can search by destination, topic, or nature of travel (study abroad, volunteer, vacation, etc.) to find information written by fellow women travelers who have been there and done that before. You can also share your own travel stories to be a resource for others. The site is a fantastic and unique resource, one that some of our Unofficial Ambassadors have contributed to during their service abroad. You can read contributions by AUA alums, Emma and Katerina, below: "Emma Way's Pre-Departure Reflection" - Emma Way "Finding Similarities Between Indonesia and the US" - Katerina Deshotel   The America's Unofficial Ambassadors Summer Service Internship Program places volunteers with schools or grassroots in NGOs in Indonesia, Morocco, Tajikistan or Tanzania.   Unofficial Ambassadors build relations between America and the Muslim World by interning full-time with a school or grassroots organization in the Muslim World for 6 weeks. Douglas Freeland, McDonald’s USA Director – Customer Engagement & Alliances Director – McDonald’s All American Games, will be available for a group discussion on Tuesday, October 29.   Mr. Freeland oversees the popular Monopoly at McDonald’s promotion, the prestigious McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Games, and sports and entertainment initiatives across a variety of platforms. An 18-year McDonald’s veteran, Mr. Freeland displays an innovative, action-oriented approach coupled with a decisive leadership style.  He leverages brand assets and branded content to attract media and publicity and drive sales.   Mr. Freeland graduated with a B.A. in Telecommunications from Indiana University in 1980.  He joined Foote, Cone and Belding advertising in 1980 followed by stints at J. Walter Thompson advertising and Quaker Oats Company.  He began his McDonald’s career in 1995.

Ryan McMeen, IU alumnus and current Army Linguist will be on hand to discuss his career path and answer questions.

Ryan McMeen is a Sergeant in the United States Army.  He graduated from Homestead High School in 2003 and subsequently enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington.  During his time at IU, Ryan studied Russian, German, Czech, and a little Georgian on the side before studying abroad in Olomouc, Czech Republic in 2005; in Freiburg, Germany, 2005-2006; and finally, in St. Petersburg, Russia, 2006-2007.  Ryan received his Bachelor’s with a double major in Slavic Languages and Literatures and Germanic Studies with a Minor in Russian and East European Studies. Afterwards, Ryan waded through a difficult job market, landing opportunities from grocery store cashier to a counselor at a Russian-immersion children?s camp in Bimidji, MN before becoming a Russian teacher for grades 3-5 in Memphis, TN.  After 6 months, Ryan decided he needed something less stressful and enlisted in the Army as a Cryptologic Linguist (35P).  After basic training, Ryan enrolled in the Defense Language Institute where he studied Modern Standard Arabic, and then he studied Pashto at Diplomatic Language Services, returning as a qualified Pashto linguist. Ryan makes regular use of all of his language skills in his job at Fort Gordon supporting forces engaged in the war on terror.

A Career Night for liberal arts students!

Do your parents constantly ask you how you’re going to get a job as an anthropology major?  Do you have friends that question a knowledge of syntax will help when you end up working in an office? The members of FESA (Folklore & Ethnomusicology Student Association) understand where you’re coming from.  That is why we invite you to join us for a Career Night.  We will have one of the great staff members of the Career Development Center on hand to give a presentation and answer questions, along with alumni of our department who are using their majors in interesting and unique ways.  Also, we’ll have refreshments!  This event is sure to be beneficial, and a lot of fun!  So, come and see us on Wednesday, March 20^th.  The presentation will start at 6:30 PM in the Folklore Building at 510 N Fess (1.5 blocks North of Mathers Museum, and 1 block West of Collins LLC).
