Looking for a 1-credit spring class?

LSTU-L 290 Work, Labor and Ecology:  Issues and Prospects (1 cr.), class number 32722
This course examines western concepts of work and the natural environment, including the origins of the work ethic and the “commodification” of labor and nature, beginning with an overview of their capitalist era beginnings.  These concepts will be explored in a modern context of ecological and labor tensions resulting from globalization, using examples of blue green alliances particularly with regard to climate change.  Chris Doran received his PhD in Political Science from Macquarie University, Sidney, Australia.
This class will meet on Tuesdays, Jan 31, Feb 7, 14, 21 & 28, 5:45-8:25pm, Ballantine Hall 138.

LSTU-L 390 Trafficking Labor Across Borders, (1 cr.), class number 32724
The main focus of the course will be modern slavery and its many faces: trafficking, the US Mexican border and the “smuggling” of agriculture laborers, forced domestic laborers, forced prostitution, as well as sweat shops in the United States. The students will also analyze why a high propensity of modern slavery in US cities positively correlates with large immigrant populations. And, in the process they will learn the ways in which increased public awareness and an introduction of new economic and social policies may combat the exploitation of international and domestic labor.  Stepanka Korytova, PhD., International Studies Program.
This class will meet in BH005, 5:45-8:25 pm on Mondays, March 26, April 2, 9, 16 and 23.
