Human Trafficking: International Law and Local Strategies

Please join us for a multi-disciplinary symposium addressing an important topic in the area of socio-legal studies, international legal cooperation, human rights, transnational crime, and public policy. The symposium will provide multiple perspectives on the humanitarian crisis created by a growth in human trafficking, and efforts by state governments, the international community, and members of civil society including a network of non-governmental organizations and multiple approaches in addressing the problem. Our distinguished speakers are

·         Kay B. Warren, Charles C. Tillinghast, Jr. '32 Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology, Anthropology Department and Director, Pembroke Center, Brown University
·         Mark Taylor, Senior Coordinator -- Reports and Political Affairs, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, U.S. Department of State
·         Priscila Siqueira, Journalist and Coordinator of the National ((Brazilian) Movement against the Trafficking of persons (MCTP- "Movimento contra o Trafico de Pessoas"), and former political coordinator of the Prevention of Women and Children Trafficking (SMM).

The symposium will be held December 2, 2011, from 9am to noon at the Maurer School of Law, room 335

The event is co-sponsored by the New Perspectives Working Group, Maurer School of Law; the following departments: Anthropology, International Studies, and Sociology; IU Human Trafficking Faculty Group; and the following Centers: the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Center for the Study of Global Change.
