EDUC-X150: “Read-Learn Techniques 1”
VT: Becoming the Best Student
This course is an 8-week “academic booster shot” for freshmen
and sophomores who need to quickly and drastically ramp-up their
performance in all their classes and become the best students they can
be. Instructors will assist in the development of a series of attitudes
essential to making this transformation happen. Students will learn to use
these attitudes to build individually-tailored and maximally effective
skills in time management, note taking, studying, test-taking strategies,
and critical thinking.

EDUC-X152: “Read-Learn Techniques 3”
VT: Learning Strategies for the New College Student
Special Topic: New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina
This 2-credit, small (10-19 students), 8 week
seminar is the total package. We work on the rapid development
of college-level skills, focusing specifically on critical thinking and
argument. At the same time, we use an incredibly rich topic to develop
these skills: the culture of New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina. We study
the history, geography, and cultural forms of the city (including food, music,
and Mardi Gras) as well as varying perspectives on Katrina. It’s
really a chance to try out a whole bunch of different disciplines while
studying an extremely interesting subject and working on skills
students can transfer to any of their classes.
