The Lecturer Indiana’s longest-serving senator (1976–2013), Richard Lugar is one of our nation’s most respected statesmen, exercising leadership on critical issues such as food security, nuclear non-proliferation, energy independence, and free trade. In the Senate, Lugar chaired the Foreign Relations Committee and the Agriculture Committee. He led initiatives, including a biofuels research program, to help decrease the nation’s dependency on foreign oil. In 1991, he forged a bipartisan partnership with Senator Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) to establish the Nunn-Lugar Program, which, to date, has deactivated more than 7,500 nuclear warheads once aimed at the United States. A two-term mayor of Indianapolis (1968-75), Lugar holds 46 honorary degrees from colleges and universities. He and his wife, Charlene, have four sons and 13 grandchildren. The Lecture Patrick O’Meara has been Indiana University’s ambassador to the world. As a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Director of the African Studies Program, Dean of International Programs, and as IU’s first Vice President for International Affairs, O’Meara has greatly expanded the range and depth of international activities at IU. The Patrick O’Meara International Lecture celebrates O’Meara’s service to IU and continues his legacy of enriching IU’s international engagement by bringing international thinkers and scholars of note to the campus.
