GESI Expands to Haiti
Starting in summer 2013, GESI students participating in Social Entrepreneur Corps'
Dominican Republic site will spend 10 days in Haiti. First in Hato
Mayor Province in the DR, and then for ten days in Ouanaminthe, just over
the border in Haiti, students will participate in grassroots development by
partnering with communities to create first-time access to life-changing
technologies, products, and services for rural communities through
locally-owned, managed, and profitable solutions, using the MicroConsignment Model
(MCM).
Known by tourists for its white sand beaches and lush green forests, the DR
stands in stark contrast to its neighbor, Haiti, on their shared island.
By comparing use of MCM in Haiti and the DR, students will see
firsthand how different cultures, histories, and societal structures
influence international development.
Prerequisite for the
GESI site in the the Dominican Republic and Haiti: 1-2 years of college
Spanish, or the equivalent.

Project Spotlight: Pneumonia Awareness and Prevention in India
Submitted by Olivia
Barnes, University of Michigan; Maya Collins, Northwestern University; Hisa
Hashisaka, Brown University; and Amber Lauff, Temple University
In summer 2012, four GESI students worked with a group of mothers in India
to create the Pneumonia Education, Awareness, and Prevention Scheme, a
health education project aimed at reducing the prevalence of pneumonia in
children under five in Udaipur, India. The project aims to decrease
the pneumonia-specific morbidity and mortality rate through the
augmentation of knowledge relating to pneumonia etiology, symptoms,
treatment, and preventive strategies among women in Udaipur. GESI students
determined the need for such a program through intensive research and field
visits, where mothers reported significant gaps in the delivery of
government proposed health services, specifically related to maternal and
child health. Additionally, during focus groups and meetings with
community members, mothers voiced a desire to learn more about pneumonia
and preventive measures for decreasing its incidence among their children.
