Translation is one of the most effective ways to introduce foreign knowledge. It is widely known that thousands of books were translated in Japan and China in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and Mongolia was no exception. After the declaration of independence in 1911, the Mongols started translating foreign constitutions and history books. Among those translations what is especially important is the Mongolian translation of Wanguogongfa (『萬國公法』), which is a Chinese translation of Elements of International Law written by Henry Weaton. The historical significance of this translation will be discussed in Makoto Tachibana’s talk.
Makoto Tachibana is a JSPS Research Fellow and a visiting scholar in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies, Indiana University. Makoto received a Ph.D in Literature at Waseda University in February, 2010. He has been working on the modern history of Mongolia and published in 2011 A Study on the Bogd Khaan Government: History of State-Building in Mongolia, 1911-1921.
