This course is designed for upper level students interested in computer science and technology as well as computational linguistics and cognitive science:
Professor Mike Gasser is offering a 400 level course in the spring, CSCI-C450/COGS-Q490 Topics that I would like to bring to your attention:
How Language Works: a Multidisciplinary, Computational Perspective
Instructor: Michael Gasser
TR 04:00P-05:15P, BH 321
This course looks at what makes human language unique, focusing on both meaning and grammar. For each topic, we will consider different theories about how it is realized cognitively, how it could be learned by children or machines, and how it is best handled in practical computational systems.
We will work with both simplified artificial languages and data from various real natural languages. Coursework will include programming assignments (in
Python) and a project in which some language behavior is simulated computationally.
Prerequisite: B/Q351 or permission of instructor
