The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI), at Northwestern University, is accepting applications for summer 2012. In order to guarantee placement in their first choice country, students should apply by the December 15 or January 16 deadlines.
You may remember, GESI is a credit-bearing summer program that offers a combination of service-learning, study abroad, cultural immersion, a home-stay, and an invaluable international pre-professional experience, working with dynamic, community-based organizations.
One of the unique elements of GESI is the project component where students develop and implement projects with communities and community organizations in-country. For example:
• A group of South Africa students started a bread baking business run by local community members as a means to generate income while providing affordable nutrition for the community.
• A GESI team of students in India worked with an environmental agency to install smokeless stoves and biogas stoves in family homes, to help prevent deforestation in the area and promote healthier air quality.
• A GESI group in Nicaragua worked at a public health clinic on the clinic's natural medicine project. They planned and planted a medicinal garden, worked with local high school students to educate them about indigenous, natural medicine, and developed a recipe book for plant-based medicines that the clinic now sells for fundraising.
If you think your students would be interested in on-the-ground community development work in Bolivia, Nicaragua, India, South Africa, or Uganda, please forward them this email and encourage them to check out our website.
Students: please also complete an interest survey, so we can learn more about you and keep in touch.
