Abstract: The rapid urbanization of the early twentieth century remade the Japanese city into its characteristic modern form.   Much of the action took place outside Tokyo, in the world of the provincial city.   This presentation examines the impact of regional development and urban growth on four second-tier cities:  Sapporo, Kanazawa, Niigata, and Okayama. 

Bio: Louise Young is Professor of Japanese history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She is the author of Japan’s Total Empire: Manchuria and the Culture of Wartime Imperialism, which won the Arisawa and Fairbank prizes.  Young recently completed a book manuscript on urbanization in prewar Japan, and she is currently working on a history of sociology and social policy.
