International Center News

Welcome to Campus!
The International Center (IC) joins IU’s faculty and staff in welcoming all students to campus. It is refreshing to see new, returning students, and visiting scholars as well as feeling the energy that everyone brings to IU. As classes get started and the students settle on their daily schedules, we wish you all a successful fall semester.

Welcome Reception
New and returning international students and scholars, staff, and friends are cordially invited to our fall Welcome Reception on Friday, September 9th, 4:00-6:30 p.m. at the International Center. This annual event is a fun way to welcome everyone back to campus and to visit with new and returning friends.

Chicago Trip—Reserve your Seat Soon
The International Center’s fall trip will be to Chicago, “the windy city”. Join us for a one-day visit to this fun city where a number of tourist attractions are available for everyone’s pleasure. For complete details about tourist attractions in Chicago, visit www.explorechicago.org. We encourage you to reserve your seat soon as this is an extremely popular trip and gets full quickly. Please note that the deadline to reserve your seat is September 19th.
Date: Saturday, October 1st
Itinerary: Leave the IC at 8:00 a.m. and return at 11:00 p.m.
Cost:$42/person (covers transportation only; payable by check or money order)

Seminar Series Program Presents: “Making Sense of Academics in the U.S.”
New international students are sometimes faced with academic challenges in the classroom that can be anxiety-producing; particularly in regards to the English language. Students who attend this session will gain valuable insight regarding professor/students interactions, classroom expectations, connecting with other students, and more. The session will take place on Thursday, September 8th, 7:00 p.m. at the International Center. Please RSVP to intlcent@indiana.edu by Wednesday, September 7th.
Sponsored by the Leo R. Dowling International Center and IU Health Center Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

Language Conversation Clubs
The International Center provides a venue for international and domestic students who are interested in practicing other languages. Below is a listing of the ones having practice sessions at the center.
·         English – Wednesdays and Fridays – 1:00–3:00 p.m.
·         Kazakh Conversation Club–Mondays–– 4:15–5:00 p.m.
·         Korean Conversation Club–Tuesdays–– 7:00–8:00 p.m.
·         Japanese Conversation Club–Wednesdays–– 5:30–7:00 p.m.
·         Chinese Conversation Club–Fridays–– 5:30–6:30 p.m.
·         Mongolian Conversation Club –– day/time TBA
