Summer 2011 Program
We are now accepting applications for our Summer 2011 program. This summer, we are combining work and play to create the ultimate "voluntourism" experience!Program Dates: June 20th- July 24th (5 weeks)
Program Location: Haenertsburg, South Africa
The Volunteering:
Volunteers will work on a variety of development projects implemented and managed by our Partner Organizations. Projects that our volunteers have worked on in the past include:
- creating and leading activities for orphaned and vulnerable children at an after-school center
- working on a 200+ One Laptop Per Child laptop distribution at 3 rural primary schools
- leading health and medical discussions for young girls interested in entering the medical field after high school
- managing two building expansion projects at youth centers
- planting a training garden at Thusanang Trust which will be used to teach home gardening skills at training workshops
- writing a training manual for how to teach creative arts classes to children
- conducting field research and organizing data about what resources rural development facilities are in need of
- tutoring disadvantaged students after school
The Tourism:
Our Summer 2011 Program will include:
- a 3 night stay at the famous Lebo's Soweto Backpackers (http://www.sowetobackpackers.com/)
- a trip to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg (http://www.apartheidmuseum.org/index-flash.html)
- a 4 hour bike tour around Soweto, the world's most famous township (http://www.sowetobicycletours.com/)
- a trip to a vibrant arts and crafts market in Johannesburg
- a 2 night, 3 day stay in Kruger National Park with personal guide (http://www.krugerpark.co.za/)
Costs include:
- Accommodation (private group housing)
- Ground Transportation (transportation to and from the airport as well as a private rental car for local transport)
- Food (breakfast and lunch provided on work days and some excursions)
- Orientation, training, and 24 hour support services
- Tourist Excursions

It should also include relevant information about what your needs and expectations are for this experience, such as earning academic credit, qualifying this experience as an internship, gaining skills in a certain area, or fulfilling a specific university requirement.
