This talk examines the recent transnationalization of South Korean cinema and considers its implications for globalization and national cinema.  Partly encouraged by domestic success and partly driven by the fierce competition that such success entailed, Korean film institutions have in recent years placed greater emphasis on transnational endeavors.  My work elaborates some of the key strategies Korean film institutions have adopted to expand their business abroad, with special attention on increased intra-regional collaborations and co-productions and the resulting hybridity of Korean cinema.  It also scrutinizes the disparate practices of the Korean film industry with regard to East Asia and the U.S.: transnational interplay with the latter is limited due to Hollywood’s focus on remakes of Korean films.  Ultimately, my study demonstrates the ambiguous nature of globalization: the world mediascape has been reconfigured by resilient national film industries and regional vitality, yet globalization is still marked by asymmetrical power relations. 

Jeeyoung Shin received her doctoral degree in Communication and Culture at Indiana University Bloomington and taught at the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently a visiting scholar in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington.
