IMU Walnut Room
This talk will provide an overview of the process by which Estonia joined the euro area on January 1, 2011 as its 17th member and assess the success of the transition from the Estonian crown to the European currency. The focus will be on the following questions.
Why have all Estonian governments since the restoration of independence supported full economic integration with Europe? What do the Estonian authorities expect to gain from membership in the euro area? In view of the euro zone’s serious problems in Greece, Ireland, and elsewhere, is this the optimum time for Estonia to become a member? How has the population of Estonia reacted to the change in currency? How has the transition gone and have there been any major problems or difficulties in the changeover?
