Asian American Association: Taste of Asia
Friday, April 12
IU Auditorium
Taste of Asia celebrates Asian American culture on the IU campus. The show consists of student and community performers and is followed by the distribution of food from local Asian restaurants. The event is a wonderful way for IU students as well as the Bloomington community to learn more about diversity and the Asian American culture. This year, we are presenting a special student-made documentary about a Cambodian refugee’s journey from the war-torn country to the United States in an effort to spread awareness of the historical events.

Abstract: The rapid urbanization of the early twentieth century remade the Japanese city into its characteristic modern form. Much of the action took place outside Tokyo, in the world of the provincial city. This presentation examines the impact of regional development and urban growth on four second-tier cities: Sapporo, Kanazawa, Niigata, and Okayama.
Bio: Louise Young is Professor of Japanese history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of Japan’s Total Empire: Manchuria and the Culture of Wartime Imperialism, which won the Arisawa and Fairbank prizes. Young recently completed a book manuscript on urbanization in prewar Japan, and she is currently working on a history of sociology and social policy.

Funding Available for Asia Pacific Week 2011
We are pleased to confirm that the Pan Asia Institute will provide funding (airfare, insurance, accommodations, and meals) for up to four IU students to participate in the Australian National University’s (ANU) Asia Pacific Week 2011, July 10-14, 2011 in Canberra. This highly-selective, five day conference will bring together 100 graduate and undergraduate students from across Australia and around the world to participate in seminars, panel discussions, and other forums related to the Asia Pacific region. It presents a wonderful opportunity for students to network not only with peers, but with leading scholars and professionals focused on Asia and the Pacific. The attached announcement as well as the APW Overview provide further specifics (please note that the latter refers only to graduate student participation – the organizers have confirmed that this is a typo and accomplished, upper-level undergraduates are also welcome to apply). Information can also be found online at: asiapacificweek.anu.edu.au.
Any student interested in participating in the program must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and have an academic interest in the region. Undergraduates must also have at least 75 credits completed at the time of application. A brief application form (attached), a resume or cv, and one letter of recommendation are needed to apply. Students should submit their complete application packet by email to panasia@indiana.edu no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 20, 2011. We regret the incredibly short lead time, but only learned of this opportunity recently.

Monday Table Topic presents: "Crowing the Harvests Queen: Femininity, Ethinicity, and Identity in Sabah, Malayasia"
by Flory Gingging, a doctoral student in the Folklore and Ethnomusicology Department
March 28
, 12:00 -1:00 p.m.
At the .ACC
The Unduk Ngadau beauty competition is held every May during harvest festival celebrations among the Kadazan, Dusun, and Murut (KDM) communities in Sabah, Malaysia. The competition seeks to crown a young KDM woman who best represents the qualities of courage, compassion, and beauty embodied by Huminodun, the daughter of Kinoingan (God). Contestants are judged based on character, the authenticity of their traditional attire, and their knowledge of Sabah’s cultures and traditions. Flory’s presentation looks at what the competition might suggest about notions of femininity and beauty among the KDM; and the ways in which it has been employed culturally and politically by Sabah’s indigenous groups as they negotiate their identities within the constraints of membership within the nation of Malaysia.
