Monday Table Topic presents: "Crowing the Harvests Queen:  Femininity, Ethinicity, and Identity in Sabah, Malayasia"by Flory Gingging, a doctoral student in the Folklore and Ethnomusicology Department
March 28, 12:00 -1:00 p.m. At the .ACC
The Unduk Ngadau beauty competition is held every May during harvest festival celebrations among the Kadazan, Dusun, and Murut (KDM) communities in Sabah, Malaysia.  The competition seeks to crown a young KDM woman who best represents the qualities of courage, compassion, and beauty embodied by Huminodun, the daughter of Kinoingan (God).  Contestants are judged based on character, the authenticity of their traditional attire, and their knowledge of Sabah’s cultures and traditions. Flory’s presentation looks at what the competition might suggest about notions of femininity and beauty among the KDM; and the ways in which it has been employed culturally and politically by Sabah’s indigenous groups as they negotiate their identities within the constraints of membership within the nation of Malaysia.
