Drop-in Question/Answer Session with an Army Linguist
Friday, Oct. 11, 2013
Ballantine Hall 565
1:30-3:30
Ryan McMeen, IU alumnus and current Army Linguist will be on
hand to discuss his career path and answer questions.
Come at 1:30 for pizza!
Ryan
McMeen is a Sergeant in the United States Army. He graduated from
Homestead High School in 2003 and subsequently enrolled at Indiana University
Bloomington. During his time at IU, Ryan studied Russian, German, Czech,
and a little Georgian on the side before studying abroad in Olomouc, Czech
Republic in 2005; in Freiburg, Germany, 2005-2006; and finally, in St.
Petersburg, Russia, 2006-2007. Ryan received his Bachelor’s with a double
major in Slavic Languages and Literatures and Germanic Studies with a Minor in
Russian and East European Studies. Afterwards, Ryan waded through a difficult
job market, landing opportunities from grocery store cashier to a counselor at
a Russian-immersion children?s camp in Bimidji, MN before becoming a Russian
teacher for grades 3-5 in Memphis, TN. After 6 months, Ryan decided he
needed something less stressful and enlisted in the Army as a Cryptologic
Linguist (35P). After basic training, Ryan enrolled in the Defense
Language Institute where he studied Modern Standard Arabic, and then he studied
Pashto at Diplomatic Language Services, returning as a qualified Pashto
linguist. Ryan makes regular use of all of his language skills in his job at
Fort Gordon supporting forces engaged in the war on terror.

Third Annual McCloskey Lecture:
“A Future for Eastern Europe and Southeast Europe”
The Russian and East European Institute and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures present the
Third Annual McCloskey Lecture:
“A Future for Eastern Europe and Southeast Europe”
Victor Jackovich
First US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Wednesday April 17, 4:00 pm
IMU University Club, President’s Room
Wine and cheese reception to follow the lecture
The annual McCloskey Lecture honors the memory of the late Frank McCloskey, who represented Indiana’s 8th District in Congress from 1983 to 1995. As a congressman who took a passionate interest in the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, he withstood the resistance of his party and the White House by persistently advocating for US action to stop the genocide in former Yugoslavia. His efforts spurred US involvement in the diplomatic process that eventually led to the Dayton Accords of 1995. After an unsuccessful re-election campaign in 1994, McCloskey devoted his energies to the cause of ending ethnic strife in the Balkans, making numerous trips to Bosnia and serving the National Democratic Institute as Kosovo Director.
Following his graduation from IU in 1971 with BA/MA degrees in Slavic Languages and Literatures, Victor Jackovich embarked on a distinguished career in the US government spanning four decades. He directed the Department of State’s Task Force on the Balkan Crisis (1990–1991), headed the first US representation to the independent state of Moldova (1992) and led US delegations to international conferences on the Balkans in Geneva and elsewhere (1992–1993). He opened the US embassy in Bosnia (1994) and spent the conflict years in Bosnia as its first US ambassador (1992–1995), before going on to serve as US Ambassador to Slovenia (1995-1998) and Associate Director of the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany (1999-2002).
Persons with disabilities who wish to attend the lecture and would like to request assistance should contact the REEI office (812-855-7309 or reei@indiana.edu).
