A Campus-Community Response to the Crisis in Japan: A Teach-In and Benefit Event

Venue: IMU Whittenberger Auditorium
In the wake of the catastrophic events in Japan, IU is sponsoring a campus-community event aimed at providing information and support to organizations such as the Japanese Student Association in their fundraising efforts.  Students, staff, and faculty from academic departments and schools including Jacobs School of Music, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Public and Environment Affairs, and the School of Journalism will share their perspectives and knowledge about the effects of the massive devastation of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  The presenters will include:   
·         Joe Coleman, School of Journalism and East Asian Languages and Cultures on “Japanese and World Media Reactions.” 
·         Beth Gazley, Assistant Professor, School of Public and Environmental Affairs and Adjunct Assistant Professor:  Political Science, Philanthropic Studies. Gazley will speak on “Giving and Volunteering:  Lessons from the Japan Quake” and focus on the following themes:  (1) giving to a developed country versus non-developed (2) The controversy over whether Japan “needs” disaster aid, (3) what aid is needed?   (4) Lessons learned from Japan’s response
·         Chuck Horowitz, Physics Department on “The Disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.” In this talk Prof. Horowitz will describe what went wrong at the power station and discuss the effects of the released radiation.
·         Greg Kasza, Department of Political Science and East Asian Languages and Cultures on “The Effect on Trust in Government”
·         Mikela Asano, IU Music student on “Current living conditions in Japan.”
·         Shingo Hamada – Ph.D student, Department of Anthropology, will talk about the geopolitics and culture of the Northern part of Japan which was badly devastated. 
Representatives from various student and community organizations will be making announcements about their fundraising efforts.  This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please email acc@indiana.edu
