“Experiencing Sophiatown:  Making a New South Africa, One Block at a Time”

David Thelen
Professor and Carmony Chair of History
Editor, Indiana Magazine of History

Friday, March 14

3:00-4:30 pm, Ballantine Hall 004

Please join the IU Historical Teaching and Practice seminar for “Experiencing Sophiatown: Making a New South Africa, One Block at a Time.”

IU distinguished professor of history emeritus  David Thelen will discuss his long-term public history project--and newly published book--on this legendary Johannesburg neighborhood.  Demolished by the apartheid government, rebuilt as a whites-only quarter known as Triomf, today’s Sophiatown seeks its place as the multiracial cultural core of a New South Africa.

Prof. Sarah Knott, of the IU department of history, moderates.
