Editorial internships at IU Press: summer and fall,
2014
Applications currently being accepted.
Deadline: April 11, 2014
Indiana University Press (IU Press) is an international
scholarly publishing house, operating within the IU Office of Scholarly
Publishing. Founded in 1950, IU Press is one of the oldest and largest
university-based presses in the United States. IU Press acquires, contracts,
and publishes more than 120 new scholarly-academic, trade and regional book
projects each year and publishes nearly 30 international scholarly journals in
the social sciences and humanities. 10-15% of books originate with IU faculty—90%
come from scholars at other institutions around the world.
The acquisitions department offers unpaid internships for
course credit to qualified and highly motivated IU undergraduate and graduate
students. Semester- Summer- and year-long internships are available, as will
fit with students’ educational goals and academic schedules and subject to the
availability of mentoring staff within IU Press. Internships are awarded on a
competitive basis, only when submissions and staff availability warrant. Applicants
are encouraged to contact IU Press as soon as possible to express interest in
applying for upcoming years or semesters.
An editorial internship at IU Press is an excellent
opportunity for students to add to their educational experiences at IU, allowing
participants to learn about contemporary scholarly publishing, through direct
engagement with Press operations and under mentorship of professional staff.
Time will be set aside for instruction to augment hands-on learning. An IU
Press editorial intern will participate in the daily activity of the editorial
department, working directly with two or more assistant sponsoring editors and
under the supervision of the editorial director. For students targeting
graduate work in the humanities, academic publication of their own, careers in
e-publishing, or for those interested in professional opportunities in media,
communications, research, or mainstream publishing, it will provide unique
access to the inner workings of a scholarly publishing house.
Duties will include but may not be limited to handling
manuscript submissions, communicating with authors, preparing manuscripts for
publication, and attending meetings, such as contract proposal meetings of the
IU Press editorial board. Opportunities will be provided for students to craft
and pursue independent research projects as well as independent study projects
with the support of their departments; (students interested in receiving
academic credit for an internship at the Press are encouraged to contact their
academic advisor when applying).
Qualifications include exceptional written and verbal
communication skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, a strong interest
in book publishing, and general comfort in a professional environment and with
using computers. Additional skills are a plus.
This is an unpaid internship for approximately 10-15 hours
per week, offered for a candidate whose goal is to apply what he or she has
learned at the Press to a future career endeavor.
Interested students should direct inquiries and send a brief
résumé and cover letter when ready to apply to pfroehli@indiana.edu
Thank you!
