Volunteer Locally

The City of Bloomington is looking for volunteers to count bicycles later this month, April 19-28.  With the results of these counts, we'll be able to estimate changes in bicycle ridership over the past year.  Year by year, we'll be able to keep a good pulse on trends in bicycling in Bloomington.

Over the past year, volunteers have contributed an amazing 181 hours of intersection counts!  This has been instrumental in establishing a baseline understanding of bicycle use in Bloomington.  Take a look at the Planning department's recent report, Bicycling in Bloomington, for details on how the counts have been used so far.

This spring, counts will also be used to analyze high-frequency bicycle crash locations and to establish a baseline of use along the proposed Allen St Bike Boulevard.  In the fall, we plan to conduct rider surveys at some of these locations to figure out how bicycling is reducing auto use, alleviating congestion, and improving health in Bloomington.

This year's counts will be conducted Tuesday through Thursday from 4 - 6 PM.  Please let me know via phone(812-349-3473) or email (caristov@bloomington.in.gov) if you are able to do one or more counts during these times, April 19-28, and we'll assign you to an intersection along with detailed instructions.
