Article VII of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
(NPT) guarantees the right of any group of states to create nuclear-weapon-free
zones (NWFZ). So far five NWFZs have been established including the Central
Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free one. Besides these zonal arrangements, Mongolia also
earned a nuclear-weapon-free status and there are three additional geographical
regions which were declared nuclear-weapon-free territories. This lecture will
focus on implications to the existing NWFZs for establishment of a Middle
Eastern Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone (WMDFZ).
