Internship Opportunity for Seniors

Hello from Cairo,

I am currently a Presidential Intern at the American University in Cairo (AUC) after graduating from Swarthmore College in June 2013. We are now in the process of recruiting applicants for the 2014-2015 Program and would greatly appreciate if you could forward this email to current seniors and department heads that may have students interested in this program.

Established in 1981, the Presidential Internship Program at The American University in Cairo (AUC) provides recent university graduates with the opportunity to work at the highest levels of an international university, experience life in Cairo and learn Arabic. Selected individuals spend one academic year working at AUC, studying Arabic and partaking in the rich intellectual and cultural life of both the University and Cairo. The program's benefits also include free housing, Arabic tutoring, a monthly stipend and funded cultural excursions around Cairo and Egypt.

Each intern fulfills a full-time position in one of seven offices, aligned with their academic and professional interests, where they develop the substantive skills and experience needed to make tangible contributions to the AUC community. For example, an environmental science and public policy graduate from William & Mary currently works at the Desert Development Center (DDC - soon to become RISE, the Research Institute for a Sustainable Environment), while a political science graduate from Georgetown works in the Provost’s office. Though I was an English Literature major, I am interning in the Office of Sustainability, where I work on projects aimed at reducing the University’s Carbon Footprint and increasing awareness of environmental issues in Egypt. You can find out more about the current interns here.

We have traditionally accepted a diverse array of students, including those with no background in Arabic or the Middle East. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2014. More information about the program and the application process is available in the attached brochure, on our website and on our Facebook page. Should students have any questions, they can direct them to interns@aucegypt.edu.

Best wishes,

Miriam Hauser
