massage, chocolate fondue, snacks, and a chance to learn more about your mood,
because we know that classes, midterms, papers, and a lack of sleep can make
any college student stressed, moody or depressed. So come join us for
some rest and relaxation! It's free and open to all IU students only.

"About 40% of white Americans and about 25% of non-white Americans are
exclusively surrounded by friends of their own race," according to an
ongoing Reuters/Ipsos poll. Why is it important to have diversity in your
friend circle? What are the hindrances from having diversity in your social
interactions? At this discussion event, students will break into small
discussion circles then come together as a large group to share their thoughts

being associated with different groups of people. Asian Americans are exploring
the urban dance scene – typically associated with African Americans and Latinos
- as a way to express themselves, relieve stress, and meet new people. Is this just
the result of social media and globalization? Or could this small act of
cultural melding lead to more tolerance and dialogue in the future? Share your

their use of and interaction with the media. Ms. Ehmer is a doctoral candidate

Topics is a monthly discussion and luncheon with graduate students and visiting
scholars at Indiana University. The roundtable serves as one of the many
informal outlets for scholars to talk about topics that are related to Asian
cultures, history, arts, education, politics, government, and business.

Description:
Fariba Nawa, an Afghan-American journalist, speaker and author, spent seven
years in Afghanistan and the region, five of those years investigating the
global heroin trade. She focuses on how Afghan women are involved and impacted
by the $65 billion business that supplies 90 percent of the world's opiates.
Nawa has reported from the Middle East, South and Central Asia for a variety of
news outlets including The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Daily Beast, Sunday
Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Christian Science Monitor. She's the author
of Opium Nation: Child Brides, Drug Lords and One Woman's Journey through
Afghanistan and Afghanistan, Inc. For info about Ms. Nawa’s visit to IU, please

Asian Cultures Around Campus
featuring Henna 101
Every
Monday, starting the week of September 9. Time: 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Come to the
ACC to learn the Indian art of henna designs. You will have hands on
experience, as well as learn basic techniques and designs. Please feel free to
bring your friends. If you are bringing a group of more than 6, please rsvp in

Play
'Mah-Jong' at the ACC Every Friday from 2- 4 pm. Mah-Jong is a game of
skill coupled with wit and fortune. It originated in China and dates far back
into ancient times. Beginners are welcome.
Go
(WeiQi in Chinese, Baduk in Korean) Every Friday from 4- 7 pm. Go is
the oldest game of strategy still played in its original form. The rules are
simple, but the strategy is fantastically complex (computers can't come close
to beating humans). Come to play, learn, or even teach this ageless game.
Asian Cultures Around Campus

Every Friday,
Time: 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Learn and
practice the art of East Asian Calligraphy with Vanessa Niu. Informal class
meets every Friday to learn and practice how to write in the ancient script.
Beginners are welcome. Lessons are free and open to the public. For more

ACC’s English Tutoring Services
The Asian Culture Center is offering English tutorials. Peer counselors will be conducting free consultations at the ACC (807 E. 10th Street) each week during the school year. Students wanting to practice their conversational skills and needing assistance with written homework, basic grammar, business language, or short research papers will be able to stop by during office hours and receive help from a peer counselor. No appointments needed. Tutoring hours are between 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Current tutoring hours are listed below. More hours will be added as we get more volunteers.
