I write to encourage you to urge
your best graduating seniors who have a strong interest in international
affairs to apply for the Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace for the 2014-2015 program year. Please note that students
who graduated within the last academic year, but who have not begun graduate
studies are also eligible for consideration. The Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to
advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international
engagement by the United States. As one of the world’s leading think tanks
specializing in international affairs, the Endowment conducts programs of
research, discussion, publication, and education.
Junior Fellows have the
opportunity to work at the Endowment in Washington, DC for the period of one
year and provide research assistance to scholars working on Carnegie
Endowment’s projects. This year the Junior Fellow positions are available
in the following areas:
§ Democracy
§ Nuclear Policy
§ Energy and Climate
§ Middle East Program - Native or near-native Arabic
language skills essential.
§ South Asia Program - Strong background in
international relations, strategy and military issues, comparative politics,
and/or international political economy is essential. Quantitative data
manipulation skills essential (fluency in R, SPSS, or Stata a plus). Note:
foreign language skills not required.
§ China Studies (Asia Program) - Mandarin Chinese reading
skills a huge plus.
§ Japan Studies (Asia Program) - Japanese language skills
required.
§ Southeast Asia Studies (Asia Program)- Background in
politics and economics of the region and knowledge of quantitative techniques a
plus.
§ Economics (Asia Program) - Mandarin Chinese reading
skills a huge plus.
§ Russia/Eurasia
Program - Excellent Russian language skills required.
IU Bloomington will nominate up to
two outstanding candidates (in different program areas) to the national
competition. Students who wish to be considered for this program are chosen via
an internal competition and then the applications of our nominees are forwarded
to the Carnegie Endowment. The Carnegie Endowment does not accept
direct student applications for this award. If they are selected,
candidates must be available to work for one year beginning August 1, 2014.
Junior Fellows currently receive an annual salary of $37,000 in addition to a
full benefits package.
To apply for the College’s
internal competition, students must first register with and pick up application
materials from Terri Greenslade, Assistant Dean in the College of Arts and
Sciences Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office (Owen Hall). Students should Ms.
McCormick at 855-1647 to arrange a time to meet with Dean Greenslade. The
deadline for submission of all materials for the internal competition is:
Friday, November 8, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Complete application packets must
be delivered by the deadline to Owen Hall 104.
