“In theory
there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.” From
a pedagogical perspective, linguistics is often perceived to be too theoretical
to directly apply to teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Many Chinese
instructors are discouraged to learn linguistics under the assumption that
theory and practice are disconnected. To address their concerns, this
presentation will discuss several prominent issues in Chinese language as
examples to illustrate how these generally considered difficulty-to-teach
aspects of the language could be explained with fundamental linguistic concepts
and rules. My purpose is to raise Chinese pedagogues’
linguistic awareness and helping them teach more effectively.
Henghua
Su is an assistant
professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. She
coordinates the Chinese Language Program and advises MA students in Chinese
pedagogy with her interdisciplinary background in Chinese Linguistics, Second Language
Acquisition and Second Language Teaching. She is currently working on exploring
individual difference in learning and constructing a dynamic learning system
with statistical modeling.
