In this course students will explore the development of the art form of the music video and consider how it has evolved in countries around the globe, reacting to and expressing concerns about both local and global issues. This will include understanding and comparing and contrasting how artists from different countries use the form to construct their identities, including the deployment of national and cultural concepts, as well as gender, sexuality, masculinity and femininity, and opinions on environmental, political, social, and economic concerns. While most videos will be by mainstream artists in their respective countries, some will be from artists in exile and indigenous peoples. Additionally, we will consider the processes of globalization and “glocalization” in relation to music and this particular art form and the impact of exporting and sharing popular and youth culture in general. Our approach will be multi-disciplinary, utilizing concepts and research from anthropology, sociology, media studies, and others.
