SUMMER STUDY ABROAD IN DAKAR, SENEGAL


June 16 – July 19, 2013

Study Site

  • Dakar is a multi-cultural, multi-lingual metropolis on the west coast of Africa surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.  It is also the political, cultural, and economic capital of Senegal and the former capital of French West Africa.  French is the official language, Wolof is the lingua franca.
  • The program is hosted by the University Cheikh Anta Diop School of Education
  • Students are housed in an apartment or bungalow-style house on campus
Academics

  • Seminar on Society, Culture, and Politics of West Africa with guest lectures by local scholars and artists (3 cr); excursions to various sites outside Dakar
  • Introduction to the Wolof Language (2 cr)
  • Field Practicum (2 cr) in Dakar-based organizations
Prerequisites

  • Two semesters of college-level French required; four semesters recommended
  • One Africa-focused and/or one relevant anthropology course strongly recommended
