Essay Contest

Guidelines

The International Experience Essay Contest of the International Studies Program recognizes the graduating major who most convincingly articulates the value of the international experience on an academic, professional and/or personal level.  The author of the winning essay will receive a $250 prize.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible a student must be an International Studies major graduating in the upcoming spring, summer or fall and must have completed either (a) the study abroad requirement of the major or (b) an internship that was based abroad and recorded as credit under INTL-I498 Internship in International Studies.  Student eligibility will be confirmed by the Academic Advisor and the Director of the International Studies Program.

FORMAT
Essays must be 8-12 double-spaced pages in length; typed in 12-point Times New Roman; utilize 1” margins; include page numbers; and must not include photographs or graphics.  The entrant’s name, email address and phone number must be clearly indicated on the first page.

CRITERIA
Only original essays will be accepted (i.e., essays previously submitted as course assignments – for any course, not just International Studies courses – will not be accepted).  Essays will be judged on clarity, depth of reflection and strength of argument.

DEADLINE
The deadline for submission of essays is March 1, 2012.  Essays may be submitted via email to intl@indiana.edu  or directly to the International Studies Program office, Woodburn Hall 300.

AUTHORIZATION OF AWARD RECIPIENT:  A committee comprised of at least three voting members of the International Studies Internal Advisory Board will choose the winner of this award from among eligible entries.  The committee will announce its decision in a written authorization signed by all committee members.  The original document will be kept on file in the International Studies Program office.

FUNDING AND DISBURSEMENT:  Funding for the award will be provided through the International Studies Enrichment Fund upon approval by the account supervisor (i.e., the Director of the International Studies Program).  In accordance with the requirements set forth by the Indiana University Foundation, the International Studies Program will maintain an ongoing record of all awards and recipients.  If applicable, that record will include necessary criteria for compliance with donor intent.
