New spring elective course

**Please note that this course will count as hours outside of the College of Arts & Sciences.**

I invite you to spread the word about a new environmental law course being offered Spring 2012 by Professor Scott Shackelford of our Kelley School Department of Business Law and Ethics. L302, Sustainability Law and Policy, will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15am to 12:30pm in BU200. No Prerequisites.
Here is quick description of who and why students should take this 300 level course:

Have you been wondering why WalMart is emphasizing local organic produce and requiring environmental data from suppliers; why Home Depot has a new green building initiative; and why Ford has introduced rainwater harvesting?  Are you interested in sustainability?  Do you want to help businesses adopt environmentally-friendly policies, make the world a better place?  Or perhaps you'd like to become a sustainability consultant?  If so, you should consider enrolling in a brand new and unique course, L302: Sustainability Law and Policy.  This course is designed to help you understand the legal, policy, and ethical dimensions of sustainable development, and to evaluate sustainable business practices within a given regulatory framework.

If you're still not convinced, consider just a few of the exciting opportunities that will likely be available to students in this course:  (syllabus still being finalized)

-Participate in a sustainability case competition for a final project, maybe even against students from other schools in a brand new format
-Help IU become only the second university in the world to complete a level G3 sustainability report, which is the leading corporate sustainability standard
-Make an original contribution to the field by doing groundbreaking research in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) database
-Engage with service learning projects around campus and in the Bloomington community
-Meet and network with an array of guest speakers in the sustainability field from around campus and beyond

Not familiar with Professor Shackelford?  Here is his bio and contact information.  (from the course syllabus)
I’m a native Hoosier, having grown up in Indianapolis, Nashville, Greenwood, and Bloomington.  I earned my Bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude with honors in Economics and Political Science, from IU along with the Elvis J. Stahr Distinguished Senior Award.  While at IU, I also took coursework as part of the Liberal Arts Management Program, including L201, and studied abroad in Spain and Britain.
Following my time as a student at IU, I went on to earn a Masters of Philosophy in International Relations, with highest distinction, from the University of Cambridge as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar (a program that I’d love to talk to any of you about if you’re interested).  In fact, I’m still a graduate student at Cambridge slated to submit my Ph.D. dissertation in international relations next year on the topic of the governance of global common pool resources.  As if that wasn’t enough school, I also earned J.D., with academic and pro bono distinction, from Stanford Law School where I was co-Editor-in-Chief of the Stanford Journal of International Law.
Prior to joining the faculty at Kelley, I worked for several multinational law firms, consulted for the U.N. Development Program in India, clerked at the NASA Office of General Counsel, helped create an elder law pro bono program at the San Mateo Legal Aid Society in California, and taught law to undergraduates at both Stanford University and at Cambridge.  Nowadays, my research focuses on cybersecurity law and policy, as well as privacy, sustainability, and international law.  For fun, I like to travel, write science journalism and fiction, train to run half and full marathons, kayak, play jazz trumpet, and listen to music.
