Upcoming events at the IU Art Museum

Japanese Woodblock Prints of Kyōgen (Comic) Actors
August 25‒December 18, 2011
Gallery of the Art of Asia and the Ancient Western World, second floor
Kyōgen is farcical spoken theatre performed as an interlude between Japanese musical dramas; it is prosaic and irreverent, and the stories are satires based on folktales and the lives of common people in feudal times. This exhibition includes portraits of Kyōgen comic actors as portrayed by Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most prolific designers of woodblock prints in nineteenth- century Japan. This new gallery installation has been organized by Lesley Ham, graduate assistant to the curator of Asian art.
