Campus Coalition Against Trafficking Call-Out

Dear Staff and Advisers,

My name is Emily Barbe and I am a senior at IU this year. If you're sending out a weekly update to students and/or it's not too inconvenient, could you please pass this information on to your students?

I recently found out that there is an organization on campus that aims to address problems in regards to human trafficking. The purpose of Campus Coalition Against Trafficking (CCAT) is to raise awareness about human trafficking, which is a humanitarian issue that affects millions of people around the world.

A lot of students have expressed interest in the organization but did not know about the first call-out meeting. CCAT is holding a second call-out meeting this Wednesday, 9/28 in Ballantine Hall, Rm 340 from 6PM-8PM.

Human trafficking is referred to as modern-day slavery, and every country--including the United States--has instances of this horrific human rights violation. Human trafficking consists of the transportation or recruitment of people by means of force, coercion or deception. The majority of trafficked persons is poor, oppressed and have very few opportunities to learn or work. Victims--normally women and children--are forced into prostitution, domestic servitude, labor, warfare, or other exploitative tasks.

Human trafficking may seem foreign, but it exists in many cities and towns throughout the United States. The items we buy, the businesses we support, and the services we utilize can directly affect people who are suffering from human trafficking. CCAT is planning various events throughout the year, such as co-hosting film screenings, bringing in a speaker from the State Department, spreading the word through various mediums of media, and planning fundraising events.

Every student--irregardless of his/her major--can participate in the efforts to raise awareness and bring human trafficking to a nearer close. If it's not too much trouble, I'd really appreciate your efforts in spreading the word about CCAT to your students! For further information, students can contact me at ebarbe@indiana.edu or 614.738.3767.

Thank You,
Emily
