Vietnam Summer Abroad Info Session

Please note that this program is only 3 weeks long, and you must spend at least 6 weeks abroad for the International Studies requirement. We can talk about how this program could be combined with others to fulfill the requirement.

VIETNAM 3-WEEK SUMMER STUDY ABROAD Information Session - November 5 at 11:00 AM in SPEA conference room 204.

Vietnam is a rapidly developing country with a rich future.  However, it is pushing up against environmental constraints, including its ability to manage fast-growing urban populations and to make sound use of its scarce natural resources.  This course considers the challenges that Vietnam faces to protect its environment in an era of globalization and material prosperity.  The course meets in and around Hanoi, Vietnam from June 24-July 16, 2011.  We seek high-achieving undergraduates from all units at IU who are prepared for an unforgettable experience in a part of the world that comparatively few Americans visit — yet where America has an indelible history.

Program Dates: June 24 - July 16 (3 weeks, 3 credit hours).

Partner Institution: Hanoi University of Science.

Course title: V450 Topics in Public Affairs: Environmental Policy and Management in Vietnam.  Half of the course is taught in Hanoi; half is taught in Ba Vi National Park, Vietnam, approximately 45 minutes west of Hanoi. Honors credit is available to students in the Hutton Honors College.

Eligibility: All IU undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in environmental policy.

Program co-directors: Matthew R. Auer, Professor of International Environmental Policy, SPEA, and Dean of the Hutton Honors College; Stephanie Lewis, Academic Advisor, SPEA.  Course is co-taught by Lien Nguyen, Professor, Hanoi University of Science (expert in urban and environmental planning).
