Sons of Norway, an international fraternal benefit society, is looking for a Cultural Coordinator to be responsible for providing cultural and program support and information to members and lodge leadership. To this end, the position will be responsible for managing media resources, developing new member programs, administering and promoting assigned programs, and for supporting various levels of leadership in the execution of those programs.
- Actively promote the library to lodges and members through various channels.
- Provide advice to lodges on the use of materials for programming.
- Manage and coordinate the Media Lending Library (videos, CDs and slide presentations).
- Manage and coordinate media for Cultural Skills Unit # 14 (Norwegian Music).
- Actively seek out additions to the library.
- Keep lending materials in good condition.
- Make copies of videos for library, including copying of outer jacket cover and coding for organized storage/retrieval of materials.
- Keep lending library databases current and up-to-date.
- Respond to all e-mails and phone calls requesting information about the Lending Library materials and other miscellaneous information, making reservations, and making sure members receive materials in a timely manner.
- Maintain and update the Lending Library materials by replacing missing slides, broken video boxes.
Member Communication and Reference (15%)
- Answer questions from members, staff and the public regarding Norwegian culture, language, history, etc.
- Refer members and the general public to other resources regarding heritage and culture.
- Answer calls about travel, genealogy, heritage, etc, emphasizing the benefits of Sons of Norway membership.
- As requested, generate and coordinate articles and information for Viking Resource, blog, Viking Resource, etc.
- Inform lodges of Norwegian events, touring groups, etc. in their area.
- As backup, welcome visitors to Sons of Norway Headquarters.
- Actively promote the cultural benefits to lodges and members, and provide guidance on using the program as a recruiting and retention tool.
- Provide guidance and advice to lodges on incorporating cultural benefits into program offerings.
- Coordinate with the design staff on the development of collateral material to promote the program.
- Answer member questions regarding the program.
- Work with production and supply staff to maintain supply of medals and cards.
- Work with design staff to develop new medals or redesign as needed.
- Coordinate development and revision of program as needed.
- Actively promote the cultural benefits to lodges and members, and provide guidance on using the program as a recruiting and retention tool.
- Provide guidance and advice to lodges on incorporating Barnelopets into lodge programming.
- Coordinate with the design staff on the development of collateral material to promote the resources.
- Maintain records of participation for periodic reporting.
- Answer member questions about the program
- Coordinate with the Supply Department on providing banners and medals to lodges for their programs.
- Develop program enhancements and develop administrative improvements.
Communications Support (10%)
- Research, recommend/provide content and write for various member and officer communication vehicles, to include Newsletter Service, Sons of Norway Blog, Viking Resource, Viking, website, etc., to excite and engage members about Norwegian heritage and culture, and modern Norway.
NATB Coordination (5%)
- Schedule location and coordinate logistics.
- Coordinate ticketing, including receiving orders and assigning tables.
- Coordinate event promotion with marketing.
- Recruit and manage volunteers for various event functions.
- Maintain database of attendees, patrons and sponsors.
- Coordinate the participation of the selected charities and other involved with the program.
- As needed translating insurance, legal and other business communication for Fraternal and other staff members.
- Find and verify Norwegian member addresses online.
- Receive and, in coordination with the Supply Department, process orders.
- Maintain stock and place new orders as needed.
- Process orders for various plaques to recognize milestones and achievements.
- Research and recommend event involvement.
- Assist preparing for events.
- Attend events to promote Sons of Norway.
Requirements
- BA in Scandinavian languages, education or communications.
- Fluency in Norwegian.
- Knowledge of Norwegian culture, literature and history
- Excellent writing & verbal communications skills
- Excellent phone manner.
- Excellent customer service skills (phone & email).
- Experience using Excel, Word, a database program and email.
- Attention to detail.
- Familiarity with genealogical research, Norwegian folk art, Norwegian-American culture.
- Familiarity with contemporary Norwegian culture, especially business culture and etiquette.
- Familiarity with adult learning theory.
- Experience writing curriculum.
- Experience directing and working with/coordinating volunteers.
