Polish Literature before 1900
SLAV-P 363 (31147)
Prof. Justyna Beinek (jbeinek@indiana.edu) A&H, CSA Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-5:15 p.m. (WH 202)
This course traces the main developments in the history of Polish literature and culture before 1900 in the context of Western and East European/Slavic traditions, with a particular focus on the interdependence of history, politics, literature, and the arts. Topics of interest: Is there a set of themes and topoi with which Polish literature is concerned across ages? What genres dominate the Polish literary tradition since the 13th/14th century until the end of the 19th century? What connections are there between West European/Russian/American and Polish literatures and cultures?
Readings from a variety of sources: Medieval religious hymns, chronicles, and plays; Renaissance songs, epigrams and elegies; Baroque love poetry and memoirs of a soldier; Enlightenment fables and the first Polish novel; Romantic lyrics, epic poems, and drama; and Positivist novels. Readings supplemented by feature films (recent literary adaptations). All texts available in English, but students with a good reading knowledge of Polish may read in the original Polish.
